The Day a Small Life Came into My Arms

Before the birth, we took maternity photos to capture my wife’s beautiful figure, and I even tried a pregnancy experience suit to understand how hard it was for her. Time flew by, and before we knew it, the due date was just around the corner.

Three days before the scheduled delivery date, I took my wife, who was struggling to breathe, to the hospital for early admission to undergo induced labor. Since that date was auspicious for the baby according to fortune-telling, we chose induced labor without hesitation.

In the labor room, my wife received the induction injection, and I stayed by her side. As time passed, I watched her pain intensify, and all I could do was hold her hand and moisten her lips since she wasn’t allowed to drink water. That was all I could do.

I thought the baby would come out quickly after the injection, but her cervix didn’t dilate as expected. My wife had to endure that state for three whole days. Eventually, the hospital decided to proceed with a cesarean section, saying that waiting any longer would be dangerous for both my wife and the baby.

I actually felt relieved. Watching my wife suffer while feeling helpless was quite an ordeal. About 20 minutes after moving my wife to the operating room and waiting outside, a loud baby’s cry pierced through the operating room and echoed into the waiting area.

Do parents really recognize their own child? The moment I heard the cry, I thought, “Ah… that’s my child…” Just then, a nurse came out and told me to prepare to receive our baby girl. I put on the hospital gown and went to the room where the baby was brought out. After a year of preparation and ten more months of waiting, this blessing came to me. The moment I held the baby in my arms, I was overcome with emotion, and tears streamed down my face. I sang a birthday song to the baby, then hugged my wife, who was still struggling with the effects of anesthesia, told her she did well, and kissed her. Only then did I truly feel like we had become a ‘family.’ All that’s left now is to protect my family for the rest of my life. I became a father, so let’s stay strong!

Today’s one line: “The day a small life came into my arms, I became a father.”

Next story: It’s the first time for mom and dad to become parents too.
